Transcription Is the Key To Work-From-Home Success: Megan’s Story
Dec 17, 2020There are misconceptions in the world today that success has to be utterly transformative or result in a six-figure salary or be about creating a business empire that changes the world.
None of that is remotely true!
Often, success is simply steering your life in the direction you want to go and being open-minded about where you end up. Success is a series of small daily wins that lead to you being able to sleep through the night without worry! Isn't a night free of worry a win we could all use more of?
Today Megan shares her story with us and we learn that success is being open to the new and interesting paths that life offers to us and that relying on ourselves is the greatest form of success.
What did your life look like before Transcribe Anywhere?
I originally went to college for journalism, but the college I chose did not work out for me.
I decided to go to community college, where I received an associate's degree as an administrative specialist, and I spent 14 years working at a urology office as a patient service representative.
What made you decide to learn transcription?
I took a required transcription course for one semester at community college and fell in love with it! But at the time, the only opportunities were in medical and legal, and my lack of experience kept me from getting hired.
What have been the most valuable things you learned during the course?
The most valuable thing I learned in the course is recognizing that people do not speak grammatically correct English and punctuation is crucial to making a transcript readable.
How long did it take you to find your first job?
I was working within a month! I finished the course in mid-September and by mid-October I was hired by a company as a subcontractor.
What advice would you give anyone thinking about becoming a transcriptionist?
The advice I would give is to study the course material. If you have questions, ask. The FB group is very helpful. The grads are able to answer a lot of questions, and when they couldn't, Marsha would give great advice and answers.
The best tip I can give is to take breaks when you get discouraged and go back to the course with a fresh mind.
What do you think it takes to be a GREAT transcriptionist?
A great transcriptionist needs to be able to learn new things, go with the flow of the company you work for, and meet deadlines on time.
What's your favorite thing about being a transcriptionist?
My favorite thing about being a transcriptionist is having the ability to work from home and get out of the everyday hustle and bustle.
What is the greatest strength that YOU personally bring to your transcription career?
My greatest strength is being able to work independently and not rely on other people.
What keeps you awake at night?
Nothing, anymore!
What success moment are you most proud of so far?
I'm proud of myself for being motivated to work from home. And I'm proud to be hired by two companies after just finishing the course.
